Building friendship with the residents of Heartopia is a core gameplay mechanic. Beyond standard conversations, raising your relationship levels unlocks exclusive furniture blueprints, crafting recipes, high-tier tools, and hidden titles. This guide outlines how to progress from Strangers to Best Friends, tracks every NPC’s schedule, and reveals all the rewards waiting at each relationship tier.

Friendship Level Progression

Friendship is measured in 5 distinct relationship tiers. Each tier requires a set amount of Friendship Points (FP) to unlock the next:

Relationship TierFP RequiredDaily Chat BonusKey Unlocks
Stranger0 FP+5 FPBasic NPC dialogue access
Acquaintance100 FP+8 FPBasic quests, store discount (5%)
Friend300 FP+10 FPRecipe hints, small gifts in mail, store discount (10%)
Close Friend600 FP+12 FPCustom furniture blueprints, side quest lines, store discount (15%)
Best Friend1,200 FP+15 FPLegendary tool blueprints, unique titles, exclusive quests, store discount (20%)

The maximum FP cap with any single NPC is 2,000 FP. After reaching Best Friend status, you can continue gaining FP for bragging rights, but no additional rewards unlock beyond 1,200 FP.

How to Earn Friendship Points (FP)

There are six primary ways to increase FP with any NPC:

1. Daily Chats

Talk to the NPC once per in-game day. Standing close to them and initiating dialogue yields a base FP bonus based on your current relationship tier (see table above). Chatting takes only a few seconds and should be part of your daily route.

2. Gift Giving (Max 3/Day)

You can give up to 3 gifts per NPC per day. Gift quality determines FP gain:

Gift QualityFP GainedExamples
Loved Gift+20 FPRare items, hybrid flowers, legendary fish/bugs
Liked Gift+10 FPStandard crops, common fish, cooked dishes
Neutral Gift+5 FPMost foraged items, basic materials
Disliked Gift-5 FPWeeds, garbage, rotten food
Hated Gift-15 FPItems directly opposed to their personality

Birthday Bonus: Giving a gift on the NPC’s birthday triples the FP gained! A Loved Gift on a birthday gives +60 FP — the single highest FP action in the game. See the birthday calendar below.

3. Mentorship Quests

Complete hobby-specific quests assigned by mentor NPCs (Vanya, Massimo, Blanc, Toshi, Elara, etc.) to receive large FP drops (50-200 FP per quest). These are the fastest way to raise specific relationships early on.

4. Tavern Hangouts

Visit NPCs dining at Massimo’s Tavern in the evenings (18:00 - 22:00) and join their tables for group conversation bonuses (+15 FP per hangout, once per day per NPC group).

5. Festival Participation

Attending seasonal festivals and interacting with NPCs during events grants bonus FP. The Spring Bloom Festival and Harvest Festival are particularly FP-rich events — see the Seasonal Events Guide for the full calendar.

6. Completing Their Requests

When an NPC sends you a letter with a specific request (e.g., “bring me 5 Pumpkins”), fulfilling it delivers 50-100 FP depending on difficulty. Check your mailbox every morning for these.

Friendship Decay & Maintenance

Friendship doesn’t stay at max level forever — you need to maintain it:

Inactivity PeriodFP Lost
7 days without interaction-10 FP
14 days without interaction-30 FP
30 days without interaction-100 FP

Best Friend Immunity: Once you reach Best Friend status (1,200 FP), decay is reduced by 75%. You only lose FP after 30 days of inactivity, and it caps at -50 FP per month. This means Best Friend status is essentially permanent for active players.

Maintenance Minimum

To keep an NPC at a stable level, you only need to:

  • Talk to them once every 6 days (prevents decay entirely)
  • Give one liked gift per week (slowly increases FP over time)

Best Friend Legendary Rewards

Reaching the maximum Best Friend status with mentor NPCs triggers a final questline that rewards you with legendary blueprints and exclusive items:

The Golden Watering Can from Blanc is widely considered the #1 priority Best Friend reward. It cuts farming time by 60% and is essential for late-game hybrid flower farming.

Complete NPC Birthday Calendar

Birthdays are the most efficient way to gain FP. Mark these dates in your calendar:

Pro Tip: On the day before an NPC’s birthday, prepare 3 Loved Gifts. On the birthday itself, give all three (+180 FP total) plus the daily chat (+15 FP) for 195 FP in a single day — enough to jump nearly two full tiers!

Romance & Dating: Is It In the Game?

One of the most frequently asked questions about Heartopia: can you romance or marry NPCs?

Current Status: No Romance System

As of the current version, there is no dating, romance, or marriage system in Heartopia. NPC relationships cap out at “Best Friend” status with no romantic options.

Why People Think There Is Romance

  • Some NPC dialogue has flirty or warm undertones
  • The “Best Friend” title screen has a heart animation
  • Many similar cozy games (Stardew Valley, Story of Seasons) have romance systems

Future Possibility

The developers have mentioned in community channels that romance is “on the long-term feature list” but not currently in active development. If it’s added, it will likely be a free content update.

What Best Friend Actually Gets You

Instead of marriage, Best Friend status unlocks:

  • Legendary tool blueprints (game-changing for progression)
  • Unique furniture and decor
  • Exclusive quest lines with story content
  • The maximum shop discount (20%)
  • Special dialogue lines and backstory reveals
  • A character portrait on your “Best Friends” wall in the menu

Fastest Path to Best Friend

Want to max out a specific NPC as quickly as possible? Follow this optimized schedule:

DayActionFP GainedRunning Total
1First chat + 3 Loved Gifts + Mentorship Quest5 + 60 + 100 = 165165
2Daily chat + 3 Loved Gifts8 + 60 = 68233
3Daily chat + 3 Loved Gifts8 + 60 = 68301 (Friend!)
4Daily chat + 3 Loved Gifts10 + 60 = 70371
5Daily chat + 3 Loved Gifts + Festival Bonus10 + 60 + 50 = 120491
6Daily chat + 3 Loved Gifts + Request Quest10 + 60 + 80 = 150641 (Close Friend!)
7Daily chat + 3 Loved Gifts + Tavern Hangout12 + 60 + 15 = 87728
8-14Daily chat + 3 Loved Gifts × 7 days(12 + 60) × 7 = 5041,232 (Best Friend!)

In optimal conditions (with quests and festivals), you can reach Best Friend in as little as 8-14 days. Without quests or festivals, it takes about 25-30 days of daily gifting.

Gift-Giving Pro Tips

1. Check Preferences First

Use the NPC Gift Guide for a complete list of every NPC’s loved, liked, and disliked items. Giving a disliked gift sets you back — always verify before gifting.

2. Stack Birthday Bonuses

If an NPC’s birthday is coming up, save your 3 daily gifts for that day. Tripled FP from a birthday is the most efficient use of gifts.

3. Cooked Dishes Are Reliable Liked Gifts

Almost every NPC likes at least one type of cooked dish. If you’re unsure what to give, a simple Pumpkin Soup or Baked Carrot is usually a safe liked gift (+10 FP).

4. Hybrid Flowers = Universal Loved Gifts

Rare hybrid flowers (Blue Roses, Black Tulips, Tiger Lilies) are loved by nearly every NPC. Growing them in your flower garden creates a renewable source of Loved Gifts for everyone.

5. Don’t Waste Loved Gifts on Strangers

At Stranger level, you only get +5 FP from daily chat. Save your precious Loved Gifts until you’re at least Acquaintances (100 FP) — the daily chat bonus scales up, and you unlock more FP-gaining activities.

6. Complete Mentorship Quests First

Before spamming gifts, complete the NPC’s initial mentorship quest. It gives 100+ FP for free and unlocks their shop or service anyway.
