Pet Racing & Competitions Complete Guide: Train Champions & Climb Leaderboards
Beyond grooming and breeding, your Heartopia companions can become competitive athletes. The weekly Saturday Pet Races are one of the most rewarding recurring activities in the game — and they tie directly into a broader competition ecosystem including five ranked leaderboards and seasonal championships. This guide covers everything from training your first racer to dominating the seasonal standings.
Unlocking Pet Racing
Pet Racing becomes available once you’ve established a companion:
- Reach Pet Care Hobby Level 12 — unlocks the full pet system (see Pet Care Guide)
- Own an Adult pet — only Adult-stage cats and dogs can compete
- Talk to Oak-Oak — the veterinarian NPC introduces the racing circuit and gives you your first Race Registration Ticket
- Visit the Race Track — located at the edge of the forest reserve, opens Saturdays only
Note: Both cats and dogs can race, but they compete in separate divisions. Dogs generally have higher base speed; cats have higher agility.
The Saturday Pet Races
Pet Races run every Saturday from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM in-game time. You can enter up to 3 races per Saturday.
Race Format
| Element | Details |
|---|---|
| Entry Cost | 1 Race Registration Ticket (1 free per week + purchasable) |
| Participants | Up to 6 pets per race (yours + 5 AI/player pets) |
| Race Length | 60-120 seconds depending on track |
| Controls | Timed stamina-boost taps + obstacle dodging |
| Rewards | Gold, Racing Tokens, and leaderboard points |
Race Mechanics
During a race, you’ll see three key UI elements:
| UI Element | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Stamina Bar | Depletes as your pet runs; refills slowly when not boosting |
| Boost Button | Tap for a burst of speed; timing matters — wait for the glowing prompt |
| Obstacle Warning | Yellow/red indicators show upcoming hazards |
Perfect Boost Timing: Tap the boost button when the stamina bar flashes gold. This triggers a Perfect Boost that costs 20% less stamina and provides 25% more speed.
The 3 Race Tracks
Each track tests different pet stats. Choose the track that matches your pet’s strengths.
| Track | Terrain | Key Stat | Difficulty | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Meadow Sprint | Flat grassland, few obstacles | Speed | ⭐ Easy | High-speed dogs |
| Forest Dash | Winding path, roots & logs | Agility | ⭐⭐ Medium | Nimble cats |
| Mountain Trial | Steep climbs, long distance | Stamina | ⭐⭐⭐ Hard | Endurance-built pets |
Track Strategy
- Meadow Sprint — Pure speed race. Tap the boost button on cooldown and don’t worry about obstacles. Ideal for a first-timer with a fast dog.
- Forest Dash — Obstacle-heavy. Prioritize an Agility-trained pet and focus on clean dodging over raw speed. Hitting an obstacle costs ~1.5 seconds.
- Mountain Trial — The longest track. Stamina depletion is the killer here — a pet that runs out of stamina slows to a crawl. Save boosts for the final climb.
Track-Specific Hazards
| Track | Hazard | Effect | Counter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meadow Sprint | None major | — | Just boost |
| Forest Dash | Roots, fallen logs | Slowdown on hit | High Agility |
| Mountain Trial | Steep inclines, loose rocks | Stamina drain | High Stamina + save boosts |
Pet Stats Explained
Three core stats determine racing performance:
| Stat | Effect | Primary Training |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | Base movement rate | Fetch / laser pointer play |
| Agility | Obstacle dodging + turn handling | Agility course training |
| Stamina | How long before slowdown | Long walks / swimming |
Each pet has hidden stat caps influenced by its breed and inherited genetic traits. Breeding for the Playful trait (reduces stamina consumption by 5%) or Loyal trait gives measurable racing advantages.
Breed Base Stats
| Breed | Speed Base | Agility Base | Stamina Base | Best Track |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Golden Retriever | 8 | 5 | 7 | Meadow Sprint |
| Border Collie | 7 | 8 | 6 | Forest Dash |
| Husky | 6 | 6 | 9 | Mountain Trial |
| Tabby Cat | 6 | 9 | 5 | Forest Dash |
| Siamese Cat | 8 | 7 | 5 | Meadow Sprint |
| Maine Coon | 5 | 6 | 8 | Mountain Trial |
Training System
You can train your pet’s stats through daily activities. Training has a daily cap to prevent grinding, so consistency beats cramming.
Daily Training Activities
| Activity | Stat Trained | Gain per Session | Daily Cap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fetch (tennis ball) | Speed | +2 | 3 sessions |
| Laser pointer play (cats) | Speed | +2 | 3 sessions |
| Agility course | Agility | +3 | 2 sessions |
| Leashed town walk | Stamina | +2 | 2 sessions |
| Stream swimming (dogs) | Stamina | +3 | 2 sessions |
Optimal daily routine: Run all available sessions each day leading up to Saturday. A well-trained pet gains roughly +12-15 total stat points per week.
Weekly Training Plan
| Day | Focus | Activities |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | Speed | 3 fetch sessions |
| Tuesday | Agility | 2 agility course sessions |
| Wednesday | Stamina | 2 swimming/walk sessions |
| Thursday | Mixed | 1 of each |
| Friday | Light | 1 of each (save pet’s mood for Saturday) |
| Saturday | RACE DAY | Use race tickets |
| Sunday | Rest / grooming | No training; focus on mood recovery |
Training Items (Boosters)
Certain foods and equipment provide temporary or permanent stat boosts:
| Item | Effect | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Energy Kibble | +5 Stamina for next race | Oak-Oak’s shop (200 Gold) |
| Speed Treat | +5 Speed for next race | Cooking / Alchemy Station |
| Agility Collar | +3 Agility (permanent equip) | Race Token reward (50 tokens) |
| Champion’s Harness | +2 all stats (permanent equip) | Season reward (top 10 finish) |
| Delighted Mood Snack | Ensures peak performance | Groom + feed before race |
Always ensure your pet is at Delighted (Green) mood before a race — a poor mood applies a hidden performance penalty. Groom and feed a favorite snack right before entering.

The 5 Competitive Leaderboards
Pet Racing feeds into Heartopia’s broader competitive scene. There are five ranked leaderboards, each tracking a different achievement. Leaderboard rewards are cosmetic only — titles, badges, and furniture — so there’s no pay-to-win pressure, just bragging rights.
| Leaderboard | Resets | What’s Tracked | Racing Connection |
|---|---|---|---|
| Most Gold | Weekly | Total Gold earned | Race winnings count |
| Best Fisher | Weekly | Largest fish caught | — |
| Biggest Farm | Monthly | Total crops harvested | — |
| Best Decorator | Monthly | House rating score | Display trophies to boost |
| Rare Collector | Seasonal | Rare items collected | Race cosmetics count |
Leaderboard Strategy
- Most Gold (Weekly): Race wins (500 Gold each × 3 races = 1,500 Gold/week) are a reliable boost. Combine with carrot farming for the top spots.
- Best Decorator (Monthly): Winning races earns Trophy Furniture, which raises your house rating score. Stack trophies in a display room. See Housing Guide.
- Rare Collector (Seasonal): Exclusive race cosmetics (Golden Leash, Champion’s Harness) count toward your rare item total.
Tip: Leaderboard rewards refresh each cycle, so consistent mid-tier finishes over a season often net more total cosmetics than one lucky #1 week.
Breeding for Racing
Best Racing Traits
| Trait | Effect | Rarity |
|---|---|---|
| Playful | -5% stamina consumption | Common |
| Loyal | +5% boost effectiveness | Uncommon |
| Swift | +3 base Speed | Rare |
| Nimble | +3 base Agility | Rare |
| Enduring | +3 base Stamina | Rare |
| Competitive | +10% leaderboard points | Epic |
Breeding Strategy
- Start with two pets whose base stats match your preferred track
- Breed for traits that complement that track (Swift for Meadow Sprint, Nimble for Forest Dash, Enduring for Mountain Trial)
- Use the Pet Breeding Guide to understand inheritance mechanics
- Keep your best racing pet separate from your “show” or companion pets
Seasonal Racing Championship
Every season (roughly every 3 months), the regular Saturday races culminate in a Grand Championship:
- Qualification: Finish in the top 20 of cumulative seasonal race points
- Format: Single-elimination bracket across all 3 tracks
- Grand Prize: Champion’s Harness (+2 all stats), exclusive “Track Legend” title, and a Legendary trophy for your home
- Runner-up rewards: Golden Leash, 500 Racing Tokens, seasonal badge
Championship Preparation
- Train consistently for the full 3 months
- Build at least one strong pet for each track type
- Stockpile Speed Treats and Energy Kibble
- Practice all three tracks in non-championship weeks
- Join a racing-focused community group for tips
Pro Tips for Winning Races
- Match pet to track. Don’t race a stamina-built dog on the agility-heavy Forest Dash. Read the track before entering.
- Train daily, not in bursts. The daily cap means steady training always beats last-minute grinding.
- Mood is a hidden stat. Always race at Delighted mood — groom and feed a favorite snack beforehand.
- Breed for racing traits. The Playful and Loyal genetic traits give permanent racing edges. Plan breeding around your racing goals.
- Save boosts for the finish. On Mountain Trial especially, holding your stamina boost for the final climb wins close races.
- Enter all 3 weekly races. Even a 4th-place finish earns leaderboard points and Gold. Never leave free tickets unused.
- Stock Speed Treats. A cheap cooked Speed Treat before a Meadow Sprint often makes the difference between 1st and 2nd.
- Perfect Boost timing. Wait for the gold flash on the stamina bar — Perfect Boosts are significantly more efficient.
- Watch the competition. If another player is far ahead, save your boosts for a closer race instead of wasting them.
- Alternate tracks. Don’t always race the same track — spread your training across all three for championships.
Racing FAQ

Q: Do races require multiplayer? No. Races fill with AI opponents if no other players are present.
Q: Can I race my friend’s pet? Yes, if you’re in the same multiplayer session and both enter the same race.
Q: What happens if I disconnect during a race? You’ll forfeit the race and lose your ticket. Stable internet is recommended.
Q: Do racing stats affect my pet’s normal behavior? No. Racing stats are separate from your pet’s affection and daily behavior.
