Logging & Mining Master Guide: Every Tree, Ore & Rare Material
Logging and mining are the backbone of Heartopia’s material economy. Every piece of furniture, every tool upgrade, every home expansion — they all start with a swing of your axe or a strike of your pickaxe. This guide covers every tree type, every ore node, every rare drop, and the most efficient way to turn raw materials into Gold and progression.
1. Getting Started: Unlocking Your Tools
Both tools are handed out early through D.G. Guild quests:
| Tool | Unlock | Source | What It Does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic Axe | D.G. Lv.2 | D.G. quest (free) | Chops common trees (Oak, Pine); 5 hits per tree |
| Basic Pickaxe | D.G. Lv.3 | D.G. quest (free) | Mines Stone and Iron; finds common fossils |
You’ll get these naturally by following the main questline. Don’t rush — the first few D.G. levels come fast. For the full upgrade tree and costs, see our Tools & Equipment Guide.
Quick Upgrade Reference
| Level | Axe | Pickaxe | Key Unlock |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Basic (free) | Basic (free) | Common trees + Stone/Iron |
| 2 | Steel Axe (400G) | Steel Pickaxe (500G) | Willow trees (Rare Timber) + Gold ore |
| 3 | Titanium Axe (1,200G) | Titanium Pickaxe (1,500G) | Ancient Trees (Moonstone) + Crystal/volcanic mining |
Upgrade priority: Get the Steel Axe before the Steel Pickaxe. Rare Timber gates house expansions and the Golden Rod blueprint, while Gold ore is nice-to-have income but not progression-critical early on.
2. Logging System: Tree Encyclopedia
Heartopia has six tree types, each with different tool requirements, drop rates, and material values. Trees respawn daily at 6:00 AM in-game.
Tree Type Overview
| Tree | Location | Tool Required | Drops | Sell Price | Respawn |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oak | Town, Farm, Forest Edge | Basic Axe | Soft Wood, occasionally Acorns | 5 Gold/wood | Daily |
| Pine | Mountain base, Snowy Peaks foothills | Basic Axe | Pine Wood, occasionally Pinecone | 15 Gold/wood | Daily |
| Willow | Willow Creek, riverbanks (night only) | Steel Axe+ | Rare Timber (20% chance), Soft Wood | 100 Gold/timber | Daily (night) |
| Mahogany | Beach jungle area | Steel Axe+ | Mahogany Wood, occasionally Sap | 30 Gold/wood | 2 days |
| Ancient Tree | Deep Forest (single tree) | Titanium Axe | Ancient Wood, 5% Moonstone drop | 50 Gold/wood, 85 Gold/Moonstone | 3 days |
| Phoenix Tree | Volcano Edge (burned stumps) | Titanium Axe | Phoenix Wood, 3% Moonstone | 100 Gold/wood | 3 days |
Tree Details
Oak Trees (Common)
The bread-and-butter tree. Oaks are everywhere around Town and your farm. Each oak takes 5 hits with a Basic Axe (3 with Steel, 1 with Titanium). You’ll get 3-5 Soft Wood per tree. Soft Wood is used in basic furniture crafting, early tool components, and fence building. Sell extras for 5 Gold each.
Pine Trees (Common)
Found at higher elevations. Same hit count as Oaks but yield Pine Wood, which is required for mountain-themed furniture and the Builder Bob’s outdoor collection. Pine Wood sells for 15 Gold — triple the value of Soft Wood.
Willow Trees (Rare Timber Source)
Willows only appear at night (8 PM – 3 AM) along the Willow Creek riverbank. They require a Steel Axe or better. Each willow has a 20% chance to drop Rare Timber alongside regular Soft Wood. Rare Timber is critical for:
- House expansions (each expansion costs 5-10 Rare Timber)
- The Golden Rod Blueprint (requires 3 Rare Timber, gifted by Vanya at Best Friend friendship)
- Premium furniture blueprints
Pro Tip: Rare Timber sells for 100 Gold each, but never sell it until your house is fully expanded and you have the Golden Rod Blueprint. It’s the single most bottlenecked material in the game. See our Housing Guide for expansion requirements.
Mahogany Trees (Tropical)
Found in the beach jungle area (unlocked at D.G. Lv.6). Mahogany respawns every 2 days, making it scarcer than common wood. It’s used in premium furniture and the Tropical decoration set. Sells for 30 Gold per piece.
Ancient Tree (Legendary)
A single Ancient Tree stands in the Deep Forest, accessible after clearing the path with a Basic Axe (D.G. Lv.2). However, you need a Titanium Axe to actually chop it. It respawns every 3 days. Each chop yields Ancient Wood (50 Gold) with a 5% chance of dropping Moonstone (85 Gold, also a museum donation item).
Moonstone is used in high-tier alchemy (Golden Fertilizer, Legendary Bait, Legendary Bird Lure) and is a rare mining drop (1% from any ore node). See our Alchemy Station Guide for recipes that consume Moonstone.
Phoenix Trees (Volcano)
Burned tree stumps at the Volcano Edge, requiring D.G. Lv.10 and a Titanium Axe. Phoenix Wood sells for 100 Gold and is used in fire-themed furniture and the Phoenix decoration set. Each stump also has a 3% chance to drop Moonstone.
Logging Skill Levels
Your Logging skill levels up as you chop trees. Higher levels reduce stamina cost per hit and unlock bonus drops:
| Level | XP Required | Bonus |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 0 (start) | Base stats |
| 2 | 500 XP (~100 trees) | -1 stamina per hit; unlocks Steel Axe purchase |
| 3 | 1,500 XP (~300 trees) | +10% wood yield per tree |

5. Fossils: The Mining Bonus
Mining doesn’t just give you ores — it also uncovers fossils that can be donated to the Museum’s Fossil Hall. Fossils are found randomly while mining at specific locations:
| Fossil | Rarity | Location | Tool | Sell Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ammonite | Common | Rocky Hills | Basic Pickaxe | 10 Gold |
| Trilobite | Common | Riverbank | Basic Pickaxe | 12 Gold |

Golden rule: Always donate the first fossil of each type to the museum. Completing the Fossil Hall at 75% grants a free Titanium Pickaxe upgrade — saving you 1,500 Gold. At 100%, you get 2,000 Gold plus the “Geology Master” Plaque and a Rare Mineral Radar that highlights nearby ore nodes on your minimap.

For the full optimized daily schedule combining logging, mining, farming, and social activities, see our Daily Resource Gathering Route Planner.
7. Material Economy: Sell vs. Keep vs. Craft
Not every material should be sold raw. Here’s the optimal use for each:
Always Sell (After Museum Donation)
| Material | Sell Price | Why Sell |
|---|---|---|
| Stone (excess) | 3 Gold | Abundant; only keep 50 for crafting |
| Copper Ore (excess) | 10 Gold | Only needed for basic tools; keep 10 |
| Gold Ore (excess) | 25 Gold | Steady income source; smelt into ingots for tools first |
Always Keep
| Material | Why Keep |
|---|---|
| Rare Timber | House expansions, Golden Rod Blueprint — never enough |
| Crystal Shard | Used in 6+ alchemy recipes and the Wishing Fountain quest |
| Moonstone | High-tier alchemy + museum donation |
| Flawless Fluorite | Camera upgrade component + museum donation |
| Mithril | Too rare to sell — save for endgame crafting |
Smelt Before Selling
| Raw Material | Smelted Product | Smelt Cost | Raw Sell | Smelted Sell | Profit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Iron Ore x2 | Iron Ingot | 5 Gold (forge fee) | 40 Gold | 40 Gold | -5 Gold (break even on volume) |
| Gold Ore x3 | Gold Ingot | 10 Gold | 75 Gold | 100 Gold | +15 Gold |
| Copper Ore x2 | Copper Sheet | 3 Gold | 20 Gold | 25 Gold | +2 Gold |
Insight: Smelting Gold Ore into Gold Ingots is profitable (+15 Gold per ingot), but only if you have excess ore after tool upgrades. For the full crafting economy breakdown, see our Crafting Workshop Guide.
8. Cross-System Synergies
Logging and mining feed directly into every other system in Heartopia:
Farming
- Wood is used for fence crafting and farm expansion
- Stone is used for path tiles and garden decorations
- See our Crop Optimization Guide for farm layout tips
Cooking
- Acorns and Pinecones (tree drops) are used in some recipes
- Mushrooms (foraged near Ancient Trees) are cooking ingredients
- See our Cooking Guide
Alchemy
- Crystal Shards are in 6+ alchemy recipes
- Moonstone is in Golden Fertilizer, Legendary Bait, and Legendary Bird Lure
- See our Alchemy Station Guide
Crafting
- Wood and Stone are the two most-used crafting materials
- Iron Ingots (from mining) are required for mid-tier furniture and tools
- See our Crafting Workshop Guide
Museum
- Mining fossils are the primary source for the Fossil Hall (10 species)
- Completing Fossil Hall at 75% grants a free Titanium Pickaxe
- See our Museum Donation Guide
Housing
- Rare Timber is the bottleneck for all house expansions
- Stone is used for fireplaces, statues, and flooring
- Metal (from smelted ore) is used for lamps and kitchen appliances
- See our Housing Guide
Money Making
- Gold ore mining generates 25 Gold per ore — a solid passive income
- Mithril at 300 Gold per piece is the highest-value mining drop
- For comparison with other income methods, see our Money Making Guide
9. Pro Tips
-
Always carry a Repair Kit (100 Gold). Your axe and pickaxe degrade at 1 durability per hit/strike. A Repair Kit fixes all tools simultaneously — far cheaper than individual NPC repairs. See Tools & Equipment for durability details.
-
Mine on rainy days. Crops don’t need watering when it rains, freeing up 15-40 stamina for mining. Rain also has a slight bonus to fossil find rates. Check our Stamina Management Guide for weather mechanics.
-
Use a Luck Potion before mining. A Luck Potion (+15% rare find chance for 10 min) costs ~200 Gold in materials but can pay for itself with a single Moonstone (85 Gold) or Crystal Geode (120 Gold) drop. Brew one at the Alchemy Station.
-
Pre-eat before mining sessions. Mining costs 3 stamina per strike — the highest in the game. Eat a high-stamina dish like Honey Roast Chicken (+188 stamina) before a mining expedition. Never start mining on an empty bar.
-
Track the Ancient Tree respawn. It’s on a 3-day cycle. Mark your calendar: Day 1 (chop), Day 2 (nothing), Day 3 (respawn). The 5% Moonstone drop means you’ll average one Moonstone every 20 chops — worth the trip for high-tier alchemy.
-
Use active codes for free materials. The code
heartopiaplaytimegrants Stone x10 + Rare Timber x6 + Flawless Fluorite x2 — a massive early-game boost. Check our Active Codes Guide for the latest codes. -
Don’t sell Crystal Shards. They look tempting at 50 Gold each, but they’re used in the Wishing Fountain restoration quest (10 needed), 6+ alchemy recipes, and Enchanted Dust crafting. Always stockpile.
-
Multiplayer mining is 2x efficient. In co-op, ore nodes respawn faster and both players get drops from the same node. Coordinate mining expeditions with friends — see our Multiplayer Guide.
Summary
- 6 tree types with escalating tool requirements — Willow (Rare Timber) and Ancient (Moonstone) are the high-value targets.
- 11 ore/mineral types across 5 mining zones — Crystal Shards and Moonstone are the most versatile materials.
- 10 fossil species found while mining — donate all to the museum for a free Titanium Pickaxe at 75% completion.
- Upgrade priority: Steel Axe (400G) → Steel Pickaxe (500G) → Titanium Axe (1,200G) → Titanium Pickaxe (1,500G).
- Daily routine: Morning mining at Rocky Hills, evening logging at Willow Creek, night expeditions to the Volcano for endgame materials.
Master the swing of your axe and the strike of your pickaxe, and you’ll never be short on materials, Gold, or museum donations again.
